Jagannath Kumbhakar

Panchmura, Bankura | 30+ Years of Craftsmanship

Rooted in the celebrated terracotta traditions of Panchmura, Bankura, Jagannath Kumbhakar has dedicated over three decades to the art of shaping Bengal’s rich cultural heritage in clay. His journey began under the guidance of his grandfather, Madanmohan Kumbhakar, from whom he inherited both the craft and the knowledge passed down through generations.

Over the years, Jagannath has evolved into an accomplished artisan and mentor while remaining deeply connected to the traditional techniques of Panchmura terracotta. He has conducted craft training programmes in Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Kolkata, sharing his knowledge and helping introduce the craft to new audiences.

His contribution to terracotta craftsmanship has earned him a State Award, while his work has travelled beyond India as well. In 2015, he visited France, representing and sharing the heritage of Indian terracotta craftsmanship on an international platform. He has also participated in numerous handicraft fairs and exhibitions across India.

Jagannath specialises in wall hangings, decorative frames, dolls, figurines, and other handcrafted décor, bringing together traditional forms, intricate detailing, and the distinctive character of Panchmura terracotta.

Today, his work stands as a continuation of a living craft tradition—where generational knowledge meets individual artistry, keeping the heritage of Panchmura alive while allowing it to find a place in contemporary homes and spaces.
